Wellness Recalls Canned Cat Food For Low Thiamine Levels

wellness cat foodWellness is a top-shelf brand of cat and dog food that is now carried at Petsmart. After discovering that some of the flavors did not include a sufficient amount of thiamine (Vitamin B1), an extremely important nutrient for cats, the Wellness Company announced a voluntary recall for canned cat food made between certain dates.

NJ Wellness goods have been affected and the remainders of the products are being pulled from store shelves.  If you have already bought Wellness cat food included in the recall, it is suggested that you not feed these products to your cats.  Contact WellPet (contact information below) to organize a refund.

WellPet revealed the low thiamine levels during self-governing testing conducted together with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in response to an isolated purchaser grievance received by the FDA. Even though WellPet has received no other reports relating to thiamine in its products, WellPet has taken extra steps with the company to make certain that this does not happen again.

The cat food products that you should look for in your home include:

Wellness Canned Cat Food (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from April 14, 2013, through Sept. 30, 2013;

Wellness Canned Cat Food Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with November 10, 2013 or November 17, 2013 best by dates.

In a statement addressed to “pet owners,” WellPet CEO Tim Callahan said, “Though the chance of developing this deficiency is remote, taking these products of the shelf is the right thing to do.”

It takes a cat weeks of eating low-thiamine food to get a deficiency. If you’ve been feeding your cat only recalled food, the symptoms to watch for include:

…loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures.

Customers who still have cans of cat food should stop feeding them to their cats and call (877) 227-9587 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern Time. Consumers with additional questions should visit www.wellnesspetfood.com
