Studies of Cat Behavior by Color

colored catsThere has not ever been a laid-back way to decide which cat is best for you than simply picking it out by color.  Studies have shown that there is a link between the color of a felines coat and their basic personality traits, which could help in choosing the best type for your household situation.  You may love white kittens, but a gray colored one may be the better pick for your needs.

White cats are often thought of as less smart, but that inclination is due to the fact that cats with blue eyes are actually deaf.  Instead of coming when called or responding to their name being said, white cats will typically just stare at you!  Don’t let this personality trait scare you away from getting a white cat though, as some surveys suggest they are calm and peaceful, as well as sociable and outgoing.

Black cats are often pre-determined to be ill-behaved and even bring bad luck, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, no matter what beliefs you may hold.

Research study suggests that cats with black fur are generally good-natured, loyal, and friendly; however stubborn is also a trait.  Studies conducted at the U.S. National Cancer Institute indicate that black fur may also be associated with health benefits including a resiliency to certain diseases.  Like black cats, black-and-white colored cats are also friendly, however they tend to wander off if a close eye is not kept, but are generally good-natured and calm.

Studies point out that gray colored cats are peaceful, gentle, affectionate, and calm while cats with tabby markings tend to be home-loving, generally good-natured, friendly, and sometimes even lazy.  Orange colored cats generally have opposite personality traits including unpredictable behavior, tempers, and can be less friendly.

Calico cats are suggested to have different qualities based on the breed rather than the color alone.  Ranging from calm and sweet-natured to mischievous and lively, calico colored cats are a toss-up!  One trait that they do share is their tendency to eat too much and become overweight if not cared for properly.

Every cat will have different traits, regardless of their color, simply due to how they are raised, the type of household they live in, and the level of care and courtesy they receive.  In order to choose the best cat for you, it is important to take all characteristics of ownership into consideration and find the one you will want to make a part of your family!

Animal Rescue Operations in Japan

Rescue Operations in JapanWhile rescue workers carry on searching for and assisting human survivors one week after Japan’s destructive earthquake and following tsunami, animal welfare groups are functioning around the clock to find medicine, food, and shelter for Japan’s animals.

Sadly, despite the determined hard work by the worldwide and local animal rescuers on the ground, there have been very few signs of animal life in the areas nearby to the disaster.

Animal Rescue Corps estimate that up to 90,000 companion animals may have been affected. That does not include livestock, wildlife and strays.  Read the rest of this entry »

Wellness Recalls Canned Cat Food For Low Thiamine Levels

wellness cat foodWellness is a top-shelf brand of cat and dog food that is now carried at Petsmart. After discovering that some of the flavors did not include a sufficient amount of thiamine (Vitamin B1), an extremely important nutrient for cats, the Wellness Company announced a voluntary recall for canned cat food made between certain dates.

NJ Wellness goods have been affected and the remainders of the products are being pulled from store shelves.  If you have already bought Wellness cat food included in the recall, it is suggested that you not feed these products to your cats.  Contact WellPet (contact information below) to organize a refund.

WellPet revealed the low thiamine levels during self-governing testing conducted together with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in response to an isolated purchaser grievance received by the FDA. Even though WellPet has received no other reports relating to thiamine in its products, WellPet has taken extra steps with the company to make certain that this does not happen again.
